Savage Garden consists of two members: Daniel Jones and Darren Hayes. In 1992, at the urging of Colby Taylor, his then girlfriend, Darren answered to and ad posted by Daniel who was looking for a singer for his band (Daniel sang with his elder brothers).Even though Darren's voice split at the audition, the two got along really well and became friends. They played for about two years in clubs but at one point started anew as Savage Garden. They sent out 150 demo tapes to record companies and got 149 rejections. The one chance they got was from Columbia Recs/Sony Music. Their self-titled debut album was released in Australia on March 24th 1997. Their first single "I Want You" brought them success, due mostly to Rosie O'Donnell who played the Australian version of "I want You" on her show, giving them a huge exposure. They where soon known as a "one-hit wonder" but Darren and Daniel proved that was wrong, as their second single "To the Moon and Back" was as big as the first one even though it wasn't what most people had expected, "I want you" part two. |
